Located in a conservation area in Mossley hill, South Liverpool, Larchwood House is nestled in the mature garden of a Victorian villa. It was important for Larchwood House to make its own statement on the site, rather than attempting to imitate the adjacent properties. As a result of this, a sharp juxtaposition is created by the use of white render, timber panels and aluminium windows, compared with the softer red brick and timber windows of the surrounding properties. Great consideration was taken for the site as a whole, enabling such a contemporary style structure to sit alongside, and complement the existing Victorian villa.
We worked in close collaboration with the client throughout the project. Larchwood House uses new technologies and techniques including self-cleaning render, rainwater recycling; under floor heating and a cantilever concrete Stair. Our client was committed to exploring sustainable design, and this approach was explored in great detail, from the use of low impact construction methods and materials, to the inclusion of sustainable appliances and lighting systems. High levels of insulation were used throughout the dwelling, this reduces the energy bill and cuts down carbon emissions linked with global climate change, an issue we believe, as architects, is essential to address.
A unique family home has been created, with great attention to detail and aesthetics. An open plan character has been explored, with the option to function as a series of separate rooms, depending on the client’s requirements. Our client was keen to work part time from home, so a home office at the front of the house allows business visitors to arrive without interrupting the main household. Throughout the house, large windows create visual links between the internal and external spaces, and the main family rooms and master bedrooms are orientated to face the private rear garden.
