This dwelling is located on a half hectare site in an exclusive residential area that is surrounded by a dense line of mature trees. It has a secluded setting, defined by the substantial crown cover of the mature trees, many of which are protected under a Tree Preservation Order.

The project is comprised of the renovation of the existing Victorian house with the addition of a new contemporary, two storey element to the rear and a traditional single storey extension to the side. In terms of design, respecting the trees and habitat they provide was fundamental. The sense of seclusion, nature and enclosure evoked was not to be compromised. An area of no build was established by the existing crown spreads.

Externally, the design consists of a mix of traditional materials e.g. timber windows and two tone brickwork, while incorporating simplified modern elements into the rear extension e.g. silicone jointed glazing and a buff render finish. This adds a crisp modern edge that blends comfortably with the surroundings.

Internally, the objective was open plan family living. The extensive glazing enables the spaces to be flooded with natural light, while ensuring a connection to the mature gardens. The new extensions bring period living up to modern day requirements.
