The client asked for a contemporary space in which to house his cedar hot tub; to compliment the modern extension to his Victorian house. The new garden design is defined by bold straight lines and a modern aesthetic, softened by the warm tones of the natural materials used: timber and sandstone.

The key statement is the handcrafted sandstone wall built by the master stonewaller Andy Loudon, disguising the shed whilst creating a stunning focal point. This traditional craft has been applied in a contemporary way, providing the client with an original piece of modern sculpture that gives him the 'wow' factor he desired.

A reflective pool provides a dramatic water feature that divides the space into two open areas. The sandstone terrace is positioned for dining close to the house and the timber deck provides space for two wooden beds to enjoy the sunniest area. The original terrace has been lowered so as not to dominate the view from the living area window, helping to make the space appear more intimate.

New timber screens to two sides of the garden are integrated into an open pergola that houses the hot tub beneath. This acts as both a decorative feature over which to grow climbing plants and as the framework for an additional privacy screen.

Grasses mingle with perennials and there is a Pinus mugo 'Mops' to add structure. The colour palette is a simple contemporary scheme of greens, white and purple. At night the space is brought to life with a number of spotlights and a rope light extending under the entire length of the coping stone of the reflective pool.

Th finished harden has surpassed the client's expectations, being a 'joy to look at as well as use'!
