The categories for this year's ceremony are as follows:

2011 Design

  • Best Bathroom Retailer

    Open to bathroom retailers in the North. Be it cutting edge contemporary, typical traditional or a varied mixture of both; quality, good design and fabulous customer service are a must for every good bathroom retailer.

    We would like to know what makes your bathroom showroom a cut above the rest? What is the history of your showroom? What brands do you stock and why? What services do you offer? What is your customer service policy?

  • Best Garden Designer

    Open to garden designers based in the North. To enter this category we need to know what makes your garden design practice stand out from the crowd?
    Provide us with an example of a recent finished project that you feel best exhibits your work.
    We need to know about the project from concept to completion.
    What was your original brief and how did you work with your client to achieve this? How did you and your client feel about the finished project? If relevant you may want to include feedback from your client to support your entry.

  • Best Group Retailer

    Open to retail groups with more than one store in the North. As business and demand for your products has expanded so too has your store count. Tell us about your retail group and its history? How many stores do you have? What kind of products do you stock and how do your source them? What is the company ethos and how is this adhered to throughout your stores?

  • Best Hotel Design

    The best hotel design award celebrates original and contemporary hotel creations across the North. Hotels of today are about creating a completely unique experience for the customer. The brand identity, technology features, facilities, interior design of rooms and communal spaces. Show us how you worked together with your clients to understand the unique selling points of their hotel and the target audience to achive this from check in though to check out.

  • Best Independent Retailer

    Open to independent interior stores in the North. Whether you stock kitchen accessories or furniture design classics it takes passion, dedication and a great deal of hard work for an independent retailer to succeed in today’s climate.
    We would like to know why you chose to set up your business? How long has your store been established? What kind of products do you stock? How do you choose and source your stock? What makes your establishment better than the competition? What makes an ideal shopping environment for your clients?

  • Best Interior Designer

    Open to interior designers based in the North. To enter this category we need to know what makes your interior design practice stand out from the crowd?
    Provide us with an example of a recent finished project that you feel best exhibits your work.
    We need to know about the project from concept to completion.
    What was your original brief and how did you work with your client to achieve this? How did you and your client feel about the finished project? If relevant you may want to include feedback from your client to support your entry.

  • Best Kitchen Retailer

    Open to kitchen retailers in the North. Often referred to as ‘the heart of the home’, creation of a perfect kitchen defines many of our readers’ homes. Why is your kitchen showroom better than the rest? What kind of clients do you work with? What kind of kitchens do you sell? What is the history of your showroom? What services do you offer and what is your customer service policy?

  • Best Newcomer to Industry

    Open to interior or garden designers based in the North. To be considered for the newcomer award you must have been in your current position for less than two years by October 2011.
    Tell us what makes your work recognisable and desirable? Why did you pursue a career in design? What have you achieved so far? What has been the pinnacle of your design career so far? What are your hopes for the future?

  • Best Restaurant / Bar design

    Open to bars and restaurants across the North. What makes your bar or restaurant a cut above the
    rest? We would need to know about the project from concept to completion. What was the original
    brief and how you worked with your client to achieve this? How do you and your client feel about
    the finished project and was the desired atmosphere achieved?

  • Best Showroom Display

    Open to showrooms in the North with a flair for visual merchandising. If you have made it your mission to create a stunning showroom, akin to a work of modern installation art, then we would love to know about it. What products have you used? How often does your display change? How do your customers react?

  • Best Wallpaper Collection

    Open to recent wallpaper collections that are stocked/sold in the North. The collection must not be more than two years old in September 2010. The resurgence of wallpaper usage has led an explosion of styles and designs. To feature in this category explain what inspired the wallpaper collection? How would you describe the collection? Where is it sold/stocked? Where and how is it produced/manufactured?

  • Livingetc Reader Award for Best Room

    We require 2-5 photos of an indoor residential room or space and a description of no more than 50 words. All entries for this award must be submitted by September 26, 2011.

  • Best Affordable New Build

    Open to new build developments or one-off builds in the North valued at £250,000 or less.

  • Best Conversion

    Open to conversion developments in the North, whether it’s a single barn conversion or an industrial building converted to apartments.

  • Best Eco Build

    Open to new build developments with outstanding eco-friendly credentials.

  • Best Family New Build (£250k - £500k)

    Open to new build developments or one-off builds in the North valued between £250,000 and £500,000.

  • Best Family New Build (£500k - £1 million)

    Open to new build developments or one-off builds in the North valued between £500,000 and £1 million.

  • Best Innovative Design

    Open to innovative developments and conversions. Tell us why your development is innovative. From unusual, cutting-edge architecture to mixed-use schemes with a fresh approach – what makes your development different?

  • Best Luxury New Build

    Open to new build developments or one-off builds in the North valued over £1 million

Our Judges

  • Sir Terence Conran

    Sir Terence Conran is one of the world’s best-known designers, restauranteurs and retailers who has been designing for over fifty years.

    Born in 1931, he founded the Habitat chain of home furnishings stores that revolutionised the UK High Street in the 1960s and 1970s.

    Most recently he is collaborating with Marks & Spencer to design an exclusive range of homewares and furniture, with the preview collection launching in September 2011.

  • Wayne Hemingway

    Wayne Hemingway believes in the supremacy of design, whether in clothes or in buildings. At the height of his fame as a fashion designer, he sold his iconic company, Red or Dead and his focus now is Hemingway Design, which specialises in affordable and social housing. Projects include homes in Lothian and apartments in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. His high profile project on Tyneside has won a series of major awards.

  • Diarmuid Gavin

    Diarmuid studied at the Botanic Gardens in Dublin. Following this, he set up his own garden design business. His business success led to a career in television, including the BBC's Home Front in the Garden - one of television's most-watched gardening programmes. As well as writing for newspapers in the UK and Ireland, he has written six books on garden design.

  • Suzanne Imre

    Suzanne began her magazine career in National Magazine’s PR department before moving to Sydney in 1997 to work for Australian Elle and Vogue Entertaining.

    Suzanne joined Living etc in 2000 and became editor in February 2002, leading the title through numerous sales increases to become Britain’s best selling modern homes magazine with international editions in India, Indonesia, Cyprus and Thailand. During Suzanne’s editorship, Livingetc has also launched its very successful website, Livingetc.com.

  • Jan Constantine

    With a background in fashion, interiors and styling, textile designer Jan Constantine’s distinctive collections have made her a household name. Her much coveted designs are exquisitely hand embroidered onto quality natural cottons, linens and silks, and have already been heralded as the ‘heirlooms of the future’. As well as running a thriving business Jan has also written many books on textiles.

  • Nick Munro

    Designer Nick studied engineering and design at Imperial College of Science and Technology and The Royal College of Art, London. He launched his career turning bedsprings into egg cups and became the UK's Young Entrepreneur of the Year. The Munro brand is synonymous with original, modern British design and his collections include pewter, ceramics, glass, furniture and lighting, all of which feature his distinctive combination of craftsmanship, integrity and wit.

  • Geoff Alsop

    Geoff has been RIBA’s NW Regional Treasurer since 2002. He is a member of Places Matter’s Design Review Panel and Manchester City Council’s Conservation Panel and was elected Regional Chair of RIBA NorthWest in September 2010.
